This is pretty late and I'm sure you've already solved your problem, but I figured I'd address the other half of your problem that you overlooked (quite possibly because you already knew this). But to others out there, device enumeration is another important of the application described here. I am not affiliated with these libraries, but I do suggest them: namely libusbx, libusb-1.0, or libusb-0.1 for device enumeration.
With any one of these C/C++ libraries you can list the attached devices and store their Vendor/Product IDs for comparison against any published list.
