Not a month into the new year and I\'ve already pulled off one of my bonehead plays. I was going to install a fresh copy of Windows XP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop. I booted from the CD/DVD drive and was momentarily distracted and didn\'t hit the F6 in time. The installation completed, but it also deleted the drivers and utilities and now I have a laptop running XP, but that\'s all it does.everything else is gone. Is this something that can be reversed, fixed, repaired, something.or is it irretrievable?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Windows XP Reached End of Life ~4 Years ago and is no longer safe to use online. F6 is only for the preinstallation Storage Controllers, which in some cases are required to recognise the HDD during installation. Given you already installed Windows XP you don\'t need to deal with these. You will have to use another computer to download the drivers to a USB flash drive and install in order.
Since that model is ancient (13 years old) you are best to use the Dell FTP Website to get the drivers: Note these drivers must be installed in the correct order or you\'ll experience issues (usually with the audio). Pressing F6 during Windows Setup allows you to supply a storage driver, but if XP was able to install anyway, it means you didn\'t need it. Were you perhaps referring to the Automated System Recovery button, which I believe is F2 or F3? But to answer your larger question, you might find a folder called Windows.old on your C drive. I can\'t remember if reinstalling XP causes an existing installation to be renamed or purged.
But if you don\'t see that and you don\'t have any backups, then unfortunately there\'s no recourse at this point. That said, the post above is correct that you absolutely should not be using XP at this point anymore, since neither Microsoft nor any major browser vendors are developing security fixes for it, and some sites simply won\'t work since Windows and/or the most recent browser versions compatible with XP simply lack the software to support newer required technology standards.
