Overlong action sequences are bogged down by cartoonish flourishes that sap them of tension, while the cartoon elements are neutered by Disney\'s naked appeal to the adult contemporary audience eating up the soundtrack and recognizable voice actors. The more gruesome moments of violence are off-camera, of course, but that necessarily robs later threats of violence of power--I feel like older Disney films neatly walked this line somehow. Perhaps I was just too young to notice, but no, seriously, Maleficent turning into that dragon was amazing. This was just a waste of time, a film trying to be all things and failing to be any of them.
